THANKFULNESS

With the Thanksgiving Holidays upon us, I revisited this blog and realize since the time I published this a few years ago, many, many more of you have joined the ranks of those of us who’ve lost loved ones. And the holidays are often very difficult. We wish we could go to sleep today and wake up January 1, 2016. But the better thing we could do would be to talk to ourselves…and the Lord…about what we’re thankful for. Hope this brightens your holiday as you join the ranks of those who choose to be thankful today.

This past week a friend and fellow GriefShare leader recommended a book by author Ann Voskamp, “one thousand gifts.” I bought the book and took it with me to read on vacation. What a life-changer.

Ms. Voskamp issued a challenge to make a list of a thousand gifts for which I am thankful. Gifts God gives me each day. Gifts I brush aside or fail to notice. Gifts for which I never say thank you to my loving Father for giving, just because He loves me.

I took Ann’s challenge and this week’s blog will be a compilation of my musings and photos taken while on vacation to Hilton Head Island and Charleston, South Carolina, where I stopped, took notice, and thanked God for these gifts, precious things to me.

I pray you too will be compelled to pick up your pen and paper to begin your list. And while…

The Kind Word

“Like apples of gold in settings of silver….” so Danele’s words are tonight. Be comforted and encouraged, sweet friends.

Dear Friends,

Somewhere around my sixth year of quarantine, I ended up having trouble with my eyes. I’d been spending hours in front of the computer writing books, so my eye trouble wasn’t surprising. I knew I needed an appointment with the eye doctor, but I was reluctant to make one. You see, for someone with multi-chemical sensitivity, a trip to the doctor is full of danger. Walking into a building exposes you to cleansers. Walking by people exposes you to perfume. Walking by a bathroom exposes you to air fresheners. Logically speaking, a trip from quarantine is inevitably going to lead to chemical exposure. After all, a person can only hold their breath for so long.  In my case, it’s around two minutes and twenty seconds. Guess how I know? Simply put, leaving quarantine is going to result in painful side effects—and that’s frightening.

Before quarantine, I used to…

Darkness obscured the noise.
Glass crashed and shattered across the floor.
A brick wrapped in brown butcher paper, decorated with hate speech scribbled in black and tied with a string, fell to the floor.
Unable to move, a frightened boy gawked. His saucer-sized-eyes reflected the horror exploding inside him.
Torched by a man saturated in hate, a flaming match ignited the gasoline he’d doused on a cross, illuminating a black football jersey with his brother’s number 22—hung there to fry in hell’s fury.

I sat in the shadows and shook and sobbed as the above scene flashed across the wide screen. Unable to restrain the gush of anguish. Transported fifty years in the past—my early teens—to a street corner in Jacksonville, Florida, just after dark. Where A gang of unruly men in white robes with pointed hoods. Shouted death threats. And burned another cross.

My brother and I were glued to the horror, but unable to look away. Daddy explained these were evil men. “But that’s what America’s all about,” he offered. “Freedom to demonstrate and say whatever you think, even when it’s wrong and folks don’t agree.”

I didn’t believe those words then and I don’t believe them now. Hate is not an acceptable synonym of freedom. If your actions harm another person, those actions aren’t legitimized because you live in America. Those actions testify of the perpetrator’s bondage to lies, hatred, and sin. But like Daddy, many in the 50’s and 60’s rejected the Klan’s evil, but hedged ignorant suspicions on the side of prejudice about anyone not like them. And the black community did the same.

Racial prejudice knows no boundaries.

First John

Unaware of the imprint those images etched in my soul, I watched this true story played out in HD in the movie, Woodlawn. Those turbulent years in our nation’s history, and the vile words and actions of then governor of Alabama, George Wallace, echoed off the screen and through the years.

I saw again the faces of those satiated with hate on that street corner so long ago, but I also heard and remembered the words of justice and peace spoken by Dr. Martin Luther King. And the maker of this film told the true story how six words transformed the lives and futures of the Woodlawn football team, the school, and the town. One afternoon in Birmingham, Alabama, the entire team of integrated, but deeply divided, angry young men uttered those life-changing words—I choose Jesus and I forgive you.

Thousands of years ago, in the Book of Deuteronomy, God recited before the people the blessing and the cursing and allowed them to likewise choose.

“See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, and death and adversity; in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, that you may live and multiply, and that the Lord your God may bless you in the land where you are entering to possess it…I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants, by loving the Lord your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him” (Deuteronomy 30:15-16, 19-20 NAS).

The same God who created the heavens and the earth, is the same God who spoke through Moses to the nation of Israel, and is the same God this nation has worshiped and served over two hundred years. This same God who blessed America would have continued to bless our nation had the people of this land chosen life and blessings and obedience, rather than death and cursings.

King Solomon was right when he said, “Behold there is nothing new under the sun.”
And here we are in 2015 having crossed that same despicable threshold. Again.

DSCF3161

The fabric of faith has been contorted and twisted and shredded across America by the continual lies and rebellion of the enemies of God and His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

I listen to the continual words of this president, and those who surround him, and the media, who, like those KKK men of the past, spew their divisive, hate laced words, dividing, vilifying, and separating Americans. Daily choosing death rather than life.

And we see this consequential death displayed in each major city in America every day. We have been sucked back in time and have allowed days of the hideous history of hatred to rekindle and reproduce in our land. Fueled by a willful ignorance of God’s Word, people of every race and creed, deceived by the times and tunes chanted by Satan and his vicious demons, dance to the melody of deception.

They fail to understand fear of The Ku Klux Klan was just another wicked lie established in the South by deceived Democrats intent on keeping the black populous from voting. Democrats controlled the South during those years. The word Republican was whispered, but not on the ballot. And did you know one of the oldest Democratic members of the U.S. Senate was a past Dragon of the Klan? Who knows how many other leaders swore allegiance to the Klan?

But that was the way of the south in the 50’s, 60’s and early 70’s—or so my Daddy believed.

And if we don’t discern and aren’t diligent to seek God’s guidance, 2016 will be the same song, umpteenth verse of this ditty of deception.

God has answered our prayers and raised up a trio of godly patriots, well qualified to seek the office of President. Men who aren’t ashamed of their faith in Jesus Christ. Men who have the courage to speak the truth. But, it’s hard to fight free stuff. Because we’ve raised a generation of folks who believe their have a right to free, refusing to care or comprehend someone has to pay for their free. Scripture instructs, “If you do not work, you do not eat.”

 Thessalonians

What’s the point, you ask? The Klan no longer exists.

Really? Are you sure?

Jesus tells us, “If we say we love God and hate our brothers, we are liars and the truth is not in us.”

Anyone who hates another human enough to kill is like a current-day-member of the Klan. Just as despicable and evil. And God says we’ve murdered them in our hearts first. Anyone who chooses the lie of the father-of-lies, rather than obeying the commands of the Lord God, will inherit the eternal consequences of their choices.

Make no mistake, for there to be a heaven, there must be a hell. But God sends no one to that eternal place of torment…they choose hell because they refuse to acknowledge and believe and choose Jesus and refuse to forgive others.

DSCF3165

I highly endorse the movie Woodlawn. And would suggest it for family viewing and discussion.

Dear Friends,

When I was in quarantine, it was dangerous for me to go outside during the day. My neighbors knew my condition–and they tried to be considerate—but they had to live too. When I’d stick my nose out my door, it seemed there was always a ditch being burned or a lawn being mowed. Since I couldn’t always go out during the day, I took to wandering by night. At 2 a.m., the road in front of my house was deserted, and I could walk to my heart’s content. The pitch dark of deep night became my time of freedom.

purple stars

Everything is quiet late at night, and the stars are spectacular. Since I wasn’t in danger of being run over, I’d walk down the middle of the road with my face tipped up toward the sky and look at the constellations. I’d always been interested in astronomy, but I’d…

“Whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction…”
(Romans 15:4 NKJV)

The nations of Israel and America were each established on the biblical precept of faith in the Lord God Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. But God brought charges against Ancient Israel in Jeremiah 2. And those words in Jeremiah, because of the immutability of God, in 2015 still stand as an indictment against both nations.
“Be astonished, O heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be very desolate, says the Lord. For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water” (Jeremiah 2:12-13 NKJV).

DSCF7825
In the Old Testament God often refers to Himself as the fountain (source and provision) of living waters. In the New Testament Jesus told the woman at the well He would give her living water to drink so she would never thirst again. And in Revelation 22:1 we are told of a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, that will proceed from the throne of God and of the Lamb.

DSCF7374 284
We all understand H2O is an essential commodity for life. But God tells us faith and trust and worship of Him, the fountain or source of living water, are the only real essentials to abundant life—and both Ancient and Modern Israel have forsaken Him. And America who for over 200 years echoed, “In God We Trust” has also forsaken His living water.

IMG_0013
Both nations have “…hewn for themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water.”
Before the days of indoor plumbing, and no, I’m not old enough to remember those days, but our lake house did have an out-house—the source of a town’s water came from cisterns that held rain water, melting snow, or dammed up rivers and streams. No rain meant no water and resulted in no life. In those days, people recognized God held life in His hands. And the Bible records the terrible droughts and famines God used to turn His peoples’ hearts back to Him.

DSCF9123
But in today’s modern world, overcome with the cistern-of-self, we give no thought to the true and only source of life giving water. We turn the handle and expect water on demand. Years of technology enable us to dam up and contain water then transfer it to cities and towns far from the source. When the distribution point of that water supply is interrupted or pipes break, our lives come to a screeching halt ‘til the water main is repaired. But what will happen when the Source of Living Water says enough?

rainbow
That’s what happened in Jeremiah’s day. God’s patience with Israel had come to an end. Their broken cistern was dry. There was no righteousness left, just like in the days of Noah. God was grieved and told Jeremiah judgment was coming. And it did. Via Nebuchadnezzar and his fierce Babylonian forces.

DSCF9127
The false prophets of Jeremiah’s day said, Oh no, God won’t judge us. We’re His people. There will be peace. Don’t believe these crazy prophets like Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. It’s gonna be all right. Don’t listen to them. Trust us.

Borrowed from: http://doctorwoodhead.com/days-noah-corruption-demonic-activity-part/
And like the foolish Israelites had always done, rather than trusting the God who delivered them from Egypt and gave them the land He promised, these chosen people once again cast their lot with unreliable liars. Liars who led them to worship idols, to sacrifice their children, and to kick God out of their tent.
Some things never change, do they?
Americans too have hewed broken cisterns.
We’ve believed the lies of dishonest preachers, false teachers, and politicians, because we haven’t bothered to find out for ourselves what the Word of God really says. And I’m talking to the church, folks. We’ve refused to believe God’s Word is truth without error and we’ve allowed liars to teach our children there is no absolute truth. That it’s right and normal to be homosexual. (Yes, even within some evangelical churches.) That killing babies is okay if you define it as choice. That it’s okay to sleep around—if it feels good—do it. Worse yet, we’ve paid these liars to lead our children down the path to hewing their own broken cisterns and filling them with false gods.

image
In Chapter 5:1-3, Jeremiah tells us not one man sought the truth. There was not man who would judge the unrighteousness—they all swore falsely. God had stricken the people, but they were not grieved. They refused correction. So God made their faces harder than rock and the people refused to return.

DSCF9133
Last week two Episcopal nuns appeared in pictures on FaceBook, with Cheshire-cat-grins plastered on their faces and their hands locked and held high for victory, celebrating legalization of homosexual marriage and abortion—while human trafficking endangers the future of our young people. And our leaders are signing peace treaties with predators throughout the world.

sun and lightning
The United States Congress has seen the evidence and understood the testimony against Planned Parenthood, yet they refuse to defund and close this murderous organization—no man (that we elected) would judge the unrighteousness, therefore they all swore falsely. And God has made their faces harder than rock–
The self-hewn cisterns of this world are parched, hollow and vile. America is dying for lack of God’s living water—yet the majority of the church refuses to drink. And once again judgment is coming on His people.
Where will God find you?
Full of abominable darkness or over-flowing with His holy light?

DSCF2349

“On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out saying, If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water…I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life’” (John 7:37-38 and John 8:12 NKJV).

earth-implosion

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. (Genesis 1:2)

Ever since Charles Darwin published his On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection or the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life, (in which, by the way, he never addresses the main thesis of his book) it seems that Christian theologians have been scrambling to defend the Genesis creation account and allow for millions of years of evolution. Even now with all the great research being done by creation scientists in the fields of biology, cosmology, geology, meteorology, paleontology, physics, and others, and by great organizations like Answers In Genesis, Creation Ministries International, the Creation Research Society, the Institute for Creation Research and others, still we have far…

Dear Friends,

During my second year of quarantine, I came down a severe case of cabin fever, and when I say severe, I mean SEVERE!! Quarantine was REALLY getting on my nerves. As I focused on the things I couldn’t do, my discontentment grew. Some days, I would pace between the table and the couch clenching and unclenching my fists while rehearsing my list of “forbidden” activities. I can’t drive. I can’t go to church. I can’t have lunch with friends. I can’t go to a movie. I can’t go to the grocery store. I can’t go to the mailbox when cars are on the road. I can’t go for a walk when the neighbor is running her dryer. I can’t…I can’t…

One day, the frustration I felt exploded into a burst of rage. I couldn’t stand being trapped inside for one more second. I stopped pacing and stormed out the door…

STARVIN’ TO DEATH

Central MarketI wheeled my grocery cart through Friday morning’s Central Market shoppers with the precision of Mario Andretti.

My list was short as was my allotted time for shopping. I glanced at my watch—12 o’clock. I’d had no lunch and it would take at least thirty minutes to make it home after I’d checked out. As usual, where had the morning gone?

DSCF3095
After the release of my first book in late August and all the promotion involved, I’ve felt like that furry, four-legged creature on its perpetual hav-a-trail—always running, but never catching up.

Central Market 3
Rounding the back corner of the store, from dairy into specialty breads, the sample table invited me taste and see. Two ladies stood in front of me. One grabbed a sample and moved on, the other stood and munched. A quick glance told me it must’ve been more than a sample. She was pregnant and there were crumbs on her cheeks. I remembered those days of soon-to-be so many years ago.

DSCF3084
The cranberry breakfast bread was so delicious I felt compelled to taste the apple nut breakfast bread. The young woman pressed closer,DSCF3083 urging me to move. I did—to the backside of the table—deciding if I wanted to purchase a loaf.

DSCF3082She moved close to the lidded container of apple nut bread with a large napkin in her hand. She removed the lid and rammed her hand inside. She pulled out a huge handful and promptly shoved the entire fistful in her mouth and gulped it down like she hadn’t eaten a morsel in a month of Sundays.

With the back of her hand she wiped her mouth, then turned and fled.

My brain froze. The reality of what just transpired ricocheted from my head to my heart and back again.

DSCF3087
What to do? Give her money? My jumbled thoughts slowed my reaction, but she vanished. And I was left with the knowledge this woman was so hungry her hands shook as she gobbled every morsel. And I missed an opportunity to…to do what? Buy her lunch? Press money into her palm? Let her know Jesus cared? ‘Cause I sure couldn’t have cared or I would have known what to do and done it. But the opportunity, like the young woman, was gone forever.

DSCF3076I’ve prayed for this young woman and the baby she carries all week. After reading Julie Cosgrove’s soon to be released novel, Freed to Forgive, I’ve wondered if she were trapped in human trafficking. And I’ve prayed for myself. So preoccupied with petty things I failed to give account for the faith within me.

And Satan has attacked me with a vengeance. I’ve never been slack in the reaction department. Why now? Testy with my husband, and by the end of Sunday’s sermon, my mind had strung a clothesline full of doubts about my own salvation.

2 Peter tells us about his experience with James and John on the Mount of Transfiguration. That scene and the words he heard were so engraved on his heart there was no room for doubt. Ever again. No doubt when he chose to be crucified upside down.

A light flashed in my mind like a flood light in the shadows of my troubled heart. And God brought to my remembrance an afternoon a few years back when He gave my husband and me a glimpse into something other than this world and my heart leaped for joy. (My blog post entitled Mystery—Unexplained—Awesome, tells about this event.)

I’ve been in a dark place this past weekend, but Peter said that’s okay: “…you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts” (2 Peter 1:19 NAS).

These are dark times, precious friends, and it’s going to get really black before Jesus comes. It’s time to access and be sure we are DSCF3081following our Lord Jesus Christ.

We are surrounded by starvin’ people. Starvin’ from physical hunger, but also a deeper, eternal tragedy—deceived and spiritually starved people. People ignorant of the Truth of God’s Word. Starvin’ to death while we, dear friends are fiddlin’ with foolish distractions and wealth that will be burned up when Jesus comes.

DSCF3090
Peter tells us in light of our salvation and knowledge of God’s Word: “…be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things–” What things? He wrote we are to be diligent in our faith—we are to supply virtue, then knowledge, and self-control. Then perseverance and godliness and brotherly kindness and finally love.

2 Peter 1:5-11 says if you do these things, “… you will never stumble; for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.”

DSCF3094
Did I mess up in Central Market Friday? Yes.
Does that mean Jesus threw me on the trash heap. No. I messed up.
But I have repented and confessed and Jesus picked me up, reminded me who I am in Him, and is correcting my focus. And you can bet next time I’ll be prepared.

How about you? Have you failed to see the starving folks around you each day? In this time of bounty it’s so easy to look away from things that trouble you and focus on what we have.

DSCF3092

Are you like me, so consumed with the screams of the urgent you freeze when important things appear? Maybe you too need a paste-your-eyelids-open moment to access your goals. A moment to see if your attitudes, actions, and reactions please God.

And if not, perhaps it’s time to re calibrate the engine of your heart so you can run with endurance the race God sets before you each day. (Hebrews 12:1-4 NAS).

And that’s one of the nicer things my husband calls me.
Of course, I’ve earned every title he’s uttered and then some. Through thirty-nine years of marriage I’ve involved him in many of my crazy escapades—usually the ones catapulting on the tame-side-of-nutty.
I’ve been known to stop along the roadside and pinch seeds from dried flowers without a thought to what lurks beneath. And I’ve chased tumble-weeds across a pasture—You can only smush two tumble-weeds in the back seat of a compact car. I’ve scoured deer moss and climbed fences and shinnied down hillsides to shoot the perfect picture—or pick the sweetest blackberries.

DSCF8807
Oh, and yes, remained precariously seated atop a fence, determined to get a charging bull’s photo, when I shoulda listened to my husband shout, “Throw the camera and run!”
But rocks are my favorite collectibles. I love ’em.

IMG_0013
A number of years ago we found a beautiful wild life refuge where herds of buffalo roam free. This beautiful place called my name. Rolling hills, peaceful valleys—and rocks—gobs of gorgeous, gray rocks! And I imagined how a few of ’em would enhance my garden.
Hubs argued, “DiAne. You can’t take those things home. Suppose it’s illegal? I’m not bailing you outta jail because of your rock collecting fetish.”
“Oh please.” I begged. “I’ll be quick. Just stay in the car and keep the engine running.”
A mild fog hovered over the winding roads. A perfect day for rock collecting. No body would see. And for goodness sake, who’d miss a few rocks?
“Over there!” I pointed to a pull-off area littered with different sized gems for my landscape. He pulled the car to a stop. I hopped out the door and raced to grab my first choice.

DSCF5986
When we first moved to Texas, I learned a quick lesson about rock hunting. Don’t ask me how I learned. Rattlesnakes live under rocks. So I aimed my boot and gave my anticipated yard art a swift kick.
To my horror, the rounded, gray object split in two and powdered like a month-old biscuit, and what was left of my treasure sailed through the air, then dropped to a dusty demise.
Snorts of laughter fractured the silent morning. Yep—my husband.
I stood humiliated. My sought-after rocks were worthless plops of dried-up buffalo poop.
Knowing what waited for me, I opened the car door, slid into the seat, and burst out laughing too.
Of course, my husband rarely misses an opportunity to share our Bonnie and Clyde moment, which he never repeats without ending up in snickers of amusement as he describes the expression on my face watching that Buffalo Pattie sail through the air and scatter in the breeze.
But how many times have we all chased what we thought was gold only to find it wasn’t treasure at all, but a pile of poop?
Which one of us hasn’t gone gooey over a good-looking guy or gal? Maybe even sacrificed a long-time friendship chasing our own imaginations rather than listening to their wise counsel. Only to end up finding the object of our lust wasn’t what we hoped they’d be. And then there were those troublesome consequences of guilt and restoration of valuable relationships.
Or have you chased the dreams of change, when all indications screamed, Danger! Danger! Have you pray about this first?
Or allowed yourself to be deceived by the crowded majority into an everyone’s-doing-it-moment, only to find yourself caged and trapped in a lie that should never have been.
Or an I’ll only do this once adventure. Who’s gonna know? Who cares? Who’s it gonna hurt? To find your life changed forever, and not for your good or God’s glory.
My mama used to say, “When something seems too good to be true—it usually is—a lie.”
God tells us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean to your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6 NAS).
Trusting Him with all my heart and acknowledging Him in all my ways is inclusive—covers everything—no exceptions. And notice, the promise is conditional. He will direct my paths if I trust and acknowledge Him. He allows me to make the original choice, but I don’t get to chose the consequences.

In Proverbs 1:7 says: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
Don’t know about you, but I’ve done some mighty foolish things in my lifetime. Things I’m ashamed of and have begged forgiveness for, and in His mercy and grace, because of the blood of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, God has forgiven me. But I am instructed to continually seek His knowledge so I don’t keep making those same mistakes over and over again.
God preserves His Word, and gives us His Spirit, and places people in our paths to warn us of deceptive lies. But it is our responsibility to seek and learn His knowledge, discern His understanding, and ask for His wisdom.
He gives us warning and further instruction in Proverbs 1:
“For the turning away of the simple (from Him) will slay them. And the complacency of fools will destroy them; but whoever listens to Me will dwell safely, and will be secure, without fear of evil” (Proverbs 1:32-33 NKJV).
Will you ask and listen when the Spirit says no, or will you be like I was that morning—chasing a counterfeit, ending up with dried-up piles of poop?
